Criteria for the Data on Mineral Producers

As per the 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), the classification of a mineral production establishment is based on its main activity. Within the context of statistics data on the mineral production developed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), establishments are in class 2122, for Metal Ore Mining, and 2123, for Nonmetallic Mineral Mining and Quarrying.

What Is an Establishment?

Is the smallest operating unit capable of reporting a specified range of basic industrial statistics of economic production (essentially employment data and the elements of input and output necessary to calculate a measure of value added). In this Census, it is usually a mine, or mine/mill, quarry or sand pit operation.
